Canarsie Brooklyn New York

ZIP Code 11234 and 11239

Picture this, a great Brooklyn New York neighborhood overlooking Jamaica Bay, with its own pier, migrating birds visit frequently. This onetime beach resort is called Canarsie.

Canarsie's relaxed pace is a result of its having remained rural longer than most Brooklyn NY neighborhoods. Developers did not realize the neighborhood's potential until the 1950's. For example, during this decade two hundred acres of former marshlands became Seaview Village, 40 blocks of ranch style split level houses and attached row houses at the Northeastern side of the neighborhood. Additional row houses were constructed and soon covered much of that area. On the other side of the neighborhood in the East 80's a mix of housing remains, with homes that are almost a hundred years old standing next to houses built during this second period of Canarsie's development.

Canarsie's population grew rapidly in the 1950's. The Paerdegat subdivision along the Paerdegat Basin was one of the last areas of the neighborhood to be developed. The streets in this section are numbered 1 - 15 and have Paerdegat before a number. Most who live in the brick two, three and four family houses that were built in the 1960's on these 15 blocks, call their neighborhood Paerdegat, not Canarsie.

Many of the new Canarsie residents moved to this shore neighborhood from other Brooklyn Communities, seeking a relaxed environment in which to raise their families.

Neighborhood Boundaries:
